GRADE LASER LEVEL BUYER’S GUIDE
Investing in the right Grade Laser Level can mean faster project turnarounds and higher profit for construction contractors. Choosing the right Grade Laser Level involves considering the nature and scope of the job and of course your budget.
Types of Grade Laser Levels
Grade Laser Levels are either single-slope or dual-slope. A dual-slope grade laser can simultaneously project a beam in the X and Y axes while a single-slope grade laser can only do so on one axis at a time. Dual-slope grade lasers are ideal for setting out driveways or any area with slopes in both the X and Y axes.
Grade lasers match the grade manually or automatically. With manual grade lasers, the operator takes the grade rod and the receiver to the elevation that needs to be matched. The laser is then manually sloped until the beam hits the on-grade position on the receiver. Manual grade matching requires two persons and requires calculations to get the grade.
Automatic grade matching involves the same process except the laser communicates with the receiver via radio and the beam automatically adjusts to the on-grade position on the receiver, allowing for one-man operation. Advanced grade lasers will also then display the actual grade. The Spectra Precision GL722 Dual Grade Laser is one example of a grade laser with automatic grade matching and display. It saves time and eliminates complex grade calculations.
Applications of Grade Lasers
Slope lasers are great for indoor and outdoor jobs of any size. Grade Laser Levels can be used for any application involving precise leveling and grade control or allowing for runoff, such as building pads, parking lots and runways, fine-grade excavation, land leveling or tiling, concrete forming, and framework, setting foundations, footings, and more.
Grade laser levels also work with machine control receivers to not only detect grade but to take it a step further and to help start digging! If you are working on a busy job site, choose a grade laser with a bump alert and beam masking to avoid damage and interference from other lasers.

Choosing the Right Grade Laser Level
Choosing a Grade laser Level can be challenging with the wide offering available in the market. Let’s take a look at some factors to consider when choosing a Grade Laser Level for sale:
1. Accuracy - Different projects need different levels of accuracy. A simple residential fencing job, for example, may be completed with ±3/32 inch accuracy over 100 feet. Bigger projects like trenching or airport construction would need a laser with at least ±1/16 inch accuracy over 100 feet.
2. Range - The working range you need depends on the project. Will you be doing short or long-range grading and slope work? You should also consider the wireless range of the laser receiver as this will affect your workflow and productivity.
3. Rotation Speeds - Grade Laser Levels usually have 300 or 600 RPM (rotation per minute). Slower rotation speeds make the beam more visible to the human eye, making it ideal for indoor use. Faster rotation speeds are easier to detect for laser receivers - great for outdoor use. If you work indoors and outdoors, it’s best to choose a Grade Laser Level with adjustable rotation speeds.
