LAYOUT LASER LEVELS & BUYER'S GUIDE
Layout Lasers, also called Multi-Line Laser Levels, are revolutionary tools designed for faster and more accurate completion of construction projects. A Multi-Line Laser Level emits a laser point and multiple lines (vertical or horizontal) to create the perfect all-in-one layout tool. It has an overhead plumb laser point, two to three 180° vertical laser lines, and a horizontal laser line, enabling quick and easy alignment and height transfers from wall to wall or floor to ceiling.
LAYOUT LASERS / MULTI-LINE LASER LEVEL BUYER'S GUIDE
Layout Laser Levels are excellent tools for any applications that require the transfer of reference points and the projection of 90° angles. It can be used for the following applications and more:
- Transferring reference heights
- Aligning suspended ceilings
- Setting out stud work on ceiling, walls, and floors
- Vertical alignment of pipes and cables
- Leveling electric sockets, radiators, and pipe installations
How Multi-Line Laser Levels Work
Layout Laser Levels work like other types of laser levels. Once you mount it on a provided base, a tripod, or other mounting options, it will automatically self-level when turned on. For most layout lasers, the line will blink when it is out of level. If the points are out of leveling range, they shut off. Once level, the line goes solid or the dot appears.
If you need to set out angled lines, many models come with an option to lock the pendulum. Some models also come with a laser receiver that let you wirelessly control the layout laser without going back and forth.
Features of Multi-Line Laser Levels
Like with other laser levels, choosing the right Layout Laser or Multi-Line Laser Level depends on the nature and scope of your construction project. Let’s talk about a few key features of a Layout Laser Level to help you determine the features you need for your applications.
1. Number of Lines
Depending on the model, Multi-Line Lasers can project 2 to 3 vertical lines plus a horizontal line. The more lines it projects, the more expensive it is. Having more lines helps with efficiency, but for simple jobs, 2 vertical lines should be enough.
2. Leveling Accuracy
Leveling accuracy is how leveled the Multi-Line Laser stays over a given distance. Advanced models have a leveling accuracy of ± 3⁄32” over 100 ft. while more affordable units stay accurate to ± 3⁄16” over 50 ft.
3. Range
Multi-Line Lasers can work from 80 feet to 300 feet depending on the specific model. The range you’ll need depends on the job. For small projects, 80 to 100 feet should suffice. For larger outdoor projects, choose a laser with at least 200 feet range that works with a laser receiver for an extended range outdoors.
4. Durability
